University of Colorado has the oldest graduate academic program in telecommunications in the United States. Its unique Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program offers graduate courses on-site and by distance learning in engineering, telecom economics, policy, and technology.

Its two-year Masters of Science program has graduated many international students and has been the model for university-based telecom education programs in many countries of Europe, Africa, and now Central Asia. Through CU's Center for Advanced Engineering and Technology Education (CAETE), a full curriculum of courses is offered through videotape/DVD, CD-ROM, streaming video, and downloading with the WebCT tool, operating on SUN Microsystems equipment.

The courses are technical, economic and business, policy and law, and programming. The Telecommunication Systems Laboratory is the research and applied arm of the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program (ITP).

The laboratory provides instruction in the latest telecommunication technologies, offers a facility for student and faculty research, serves as a focus for partnership with industry, and supports department activities in both on-campus and distance learning. The laboratory has the capacity to simulate large telephony and data networks. The current capabilities include VoIP, PBXs, ATM, Frame Relay, DSL, ISDN, as well as more advanced routing and switching technologies such as MPLS and VLANs.
